Your body

Taking care of your physical wellbeing is integral to feeling good and living a happy and healthy life. Eating nutritious foods is one great way to care for your body. Enjoying plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes, wholegrain breads and cereals, some soy or low fat dairy as well as a variety of nuts and seeds will certainly help with keeping your body in tip-top condition. When choosing foods for your body, be mindful that the choices you make can also affect the environment. Focus on plant foods for protein, choose organic where possible and pick items that have minimal or recyclable packaging.

Physical activity, of course, is also very important when talking about the body and we have some information on exercise for relaxation and stress management in our Activate section. Caring for your body can also include exfoliating your skin, having a massage or hydrotherapy.

And remember, when it comes to your body, prevention is better than cure. It’s about mutual respect, take care of your body and in turn it will take care of you. Author, Trevor Romain sums up this concept by asking: If you don’t take care of your body – where are you going to live?

Your mind

In recent years there has been more attention given to the health of the mind. Your mind includes your thoughts and what you tell yourself with ‘self talk’. The health of your mind is much more than the absence of mental illness. Caring for your mind also includes being optimistic! The findings presented at this year’s Happiness Conference indicate that people who are optimistic are more likely to be happy. And optimism isn’t necessarily about being unrealistic – it’s about planning for the worst, but hoping for the best.

Research published in the Journal of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback shows that by being aware of your breathing and slowing down your rate to between seven and nine breaths per minute you can help rejuvenate your mind and help with stress and depression.

Your heart

Your heart is the centre of emotion. It is also the part of you that expresses love and compassion for others. You have the potential to make a real and lasting difference to your community by supporting and caring for others. You can support your community by buying food locally from growers in your area or you can grow your own and share with neighbours and friends.

Researchers from the US, who presented at the Happiness Conference, found that engaging in community service or volunteering can improve self-esteem, improve sense of contentment and generally make us feel good.

Physically, your heart is the life of your body and caring for your heart includes enjoying a healthy diet and limiting saturated fat found in foods like cakes, pastries, processed snack foods, butter and meat and engaging in moderate to high intensity activity.

Your spirit

Optimal health includes a spiritual awareness. Being spiritual can include having a religious faith, or it may be the relationship you have with yourself, your community or your world. When trying to apply this in terms of food, it can be as simple as recognising that the food you eat nourishes you and choosing foods that are going to help your body flourish is the best way of respecting the gift of life you have been given. It may also include taking a moment before each meal to be grateful for it.

Ensuring that your spirit is in good health is also about having a clear purpose in life and being passionate about it. It’s about doing what you love. We’ve got more information on nourishing your spirit in our Fascinating Health Facts Section.

When you care for your body physically, your mind is active, you contribute to your community and have a spiritual connection and a purpose in life – you place yourself in a wonderful position to experience genuine ‘wholistic’ health and happiness.

We’ve given you some information that can help you care for your whole self, but there may be times when you need some help from a health care provider. If you choose an alternative health care path e.g. naturopathy or acupuncture, here are some quick things you should check before you book your visit:

What is the level of the practitioners training? (Ideally, they should have a University degree or a qualification from a reputable college)

How many years have they been practising?

Can they provide you with scientific information to show the therapy is effective?

Are there any adverse effects of the therapy?

What is their fee? (the price for alternative therapies can vary significantly – it’s best to know up front what it’s going to cost)

It’s good to get all the information before you make an appointment so you can make an informed decision about whether you’re comfortable with undertaking the therapy.

Ginseng is an herb that has been used as a palliative for various ailments since time immemorial in many ancient cultures like the Chinese.

Ginseng, also referred to as Panax Ginseng, is an herb that has been in use in China for over 5000 years because of the belief that it has the property of increasing the longevity as well as the health of the user. Its generic name, ‘Panax’, comes from the Greek word for panacea, ‘panakos’, while the word ‘ginseng’ comes from ‘jen-shen’, a Chinese word that stands for ‘in the image of man’, since the roots of the plant are often in the shape of a human, which are particularly prized. Old roots in particular, some said to be a hundred years old, are considered especially beneficial, since it is thought that the person consuming it acquires the longevity.

Ginseng is available as three main types of species: Oriental, used by the Chinese in their traditional medicine; American; and Siberian. Like the Chinese, the native Americans too have been using ginseng as a palliative for all sorts of ailments since time immemorial.

The Beneficial Effects of Ginseng

Many ancient cultures have held the ginseng plant in high regard due to its medicinal properties. It is thought to have several properties such as being an emollient, a medicine for gastric problems, a stimulant, and as an aphrodisiac.

According to ancient tradition, the ginseng root was taken to rejuvenate, fortify, and invigorate the whole body. Medicinally, the ginseng plant has been used as a curative for all sorts of disorders such as ulcers, stress, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, lung problems, tumors, degenerative conditions, fatigue, diabetes, depression, and even as an anti-aging ingredient. Plus, it has also been used for treating diseases of the gums and teeth, increase women’s fertility, ease labor pains during childbirth, regulate menstruation, and improve energy and appetite.

Herbalists regard ginseng as an adaptogen, which means that it improves the resistance of the body to various stress factors like fatigue, nervousness, and trauma. Traditional medicinal systems have referred to adaptogens as restoratives, rasayanas, qi tonics, and rejuvenating herbs. In fact, according to some research, it has been found that ginseng can indeed increase reaction and coordination, lessen tiredness, and improve stamina.

It is also thought that ginseng helps in boosting the immune system, aiding the body in fighting off infection, especially when it is under stress. In research done in the laboratory, it has been found that ginseng can improve learning abilities and memory, normalize blood sugar and cholesterol levels, regulate the functioning of the of the reproductive hormones, and seems to provide protection to the heart and the liver. However, these effects have to be studied on humans in order confirm them.

Although ginseng is thought to be an energizer, however, it does not have the stimulating effects that coffee has. Nevertheless, those who take ginseng usually report that they have a sense of an improvement in their general feeling of health and wellness.

So, Should Ginseng be taken Seriously as a Cure-All?

Well, despite old world beliefs in the efficacy of ginseng to cure just about everything as well as studies proving it to be so, other studies have disputed the various claims made by its manufacturers. Although, the saponins that ginseng contains does seem to have anti-stress and anti-aging effects. However, many scientists are of the opinion that further studies are required for conclusive evidence that it does. Besides, most of the claims made on behalf of ginseng are based on studies made on rodents, and even though these may have had some of the beneficial effects on them, it may not hold true for humans too.<!-- This page was viewed on Buzzle.com on 10/7/2008 4:50:03 AM.

Ginseng Tea:
Ginseng, botanical name Panax (’All Heal’ in Greek) is a perennial plant with a fleshy root. You can make herbal tea from the fleshy root of the Ginseng plant. Ginseng Tea is said to have many healing and energy-giving properties. All the health benefits are brought about due to the presence of natural chemicals called ‘Ginsenosides’ in the Ginseng root.

Ginseng originated in Manchuria and has been in use for some 5000 years. It was called ‘Ren Shen’ by the Ancient Chinese. ‘Ren Shen’ means ‘Man Root’ and refers to the human-like shape of the Ginseng root. In Korea and Japan, Ginseng is called ‘Ninjin’. The Chinese placed great faith in Ginseng and considered it a sort of rejuvenating, cure-all palliative for a variety of ailments. They also believed that regular drinking of Ginseng Tea would lead to a long life. Ginseng was so valuable it was bartered for silk and even prized above gold. The demand was such that the supply of Ginseng from the Chinese Mainland was not enough and the Chinese had to import it from Korea. Soon the Ginseng stock in the wild was exhausted and commercial cultivation became inevitable. However, Wild Ginseng has more medicinal value than cultivated Ginseng.

The Ginseng root is used fresh or dried for later use. You can buy it whole, sliced, in powder form, in tea bags, etc. Sometimes the Ginseng plant leaves are also used, but these are not considered as important as the root. Cultivated Ginseng can be had as Red Ginseng and White Ginseng. In both cases, the Ginseng plants are grown for about 6 years before their roots are harvested. The difference lies in the way the roots are processed for use. To make White Ginseng, the root is peeled and sun-dried. The dried root looks yellowish-white. To make Red Ginseng, the unpeeled root undergoes steaming, turns reddish-brown, and is then dried.

These days Ginseng Tea is a popular herbal drink the world over and Ginseng is grown in many places. There are different types of Ginseng. Let’s take a look at some of them -

Indian Ginseng, also known as Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) – Found on the Indian Sub-continent.

Asian Ginseng (Panax Ginseng) – Asian Ginseng is found in China, Japan, and Korea.

Japanese Ginseng (Panax Japonicum) – Like the name indicatess, Japanese Ginseng grows in Japan.

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus Senticosus) – Siberian Ginseng grows in China, Japan, Korea, and Russia. It is not really a Ginseng, has a wood-like rather than fleshy root, and contains chemicals called Eleutherosides, instead of Ginsenosides.

Southern Ginseng, also known as Jiaogulan (Gynostemma Pentaphyllum) – Southern Ginseng is found in Southern China, Southern Japan, and Southern Korea.

Prince Ginseng (Pseudostellaria heterophylla) – Prince Ginseng is found mainly in the Southern Chinese provinces of Shaanxi, Shandong, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Henan, and Zhejiang.

Brazilian Ginseng (Pfaffia Paniculata)– Brazilian Ginseng is found in Brazil. The Brazilians call it Suma Root and ‘Para Todo’ or ‘For All’.

Peruvian Ginseng, also known as Maca (Epidium Meyenii) - Peruvian Ginseng grows in the Ande Mountains of Peru and Bolivia. It is both eaten as a root vegetable and used for medicinal purposes.

American Ginseng – American Ginseng grows in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Georgia, Oklahoma, British Columbia, and Ontario.

Health Benefits of Ginseng:
While Ginseng has been traditionally considered a ‘cure all’, many modern researchers question the actual efficacy of the root. The studies done on the subject have either not been extensive enough or have produced controversial results. Even so, a great many people swear by Ginseng Tea and consume it on a regular basis. According to these Ginseng supporters, it is beneficial in the following different ways -

Ginseng helps build up an appetite.

Ginseng helps with digestion.

Ginseng aids respiration.

Ginseng is rejuvenating and works against fatigue.

Ginseng helps reduce physical and mental stress.

Ginseng aids the immune system.

Ginseng works as an aphrodisiac.

Ginseng helps counter arthritis.

Ginseng helps counter asthma.

Ginseng helps counter diabetes.

Ginseng reduces the risk of cancer.

Ginseng lessens the effects of Crohn’s Disease.

Ginseng is effective against Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Syndrome.

Ginseng helps lower (LDL) bad cholesterol levels.

Ginseng is effective against headaches.

Ginseng provides a cure for stomach ulcers.

Ginseng provides a cure for diarrhea.

Ginseng is good for blood circulation.

Siberian Ginseng Dosage )Siberian Gensing Dosage) recommendations vary greatly. From 400 mg daily up to a few grams daily has been recommended. However, it is important for each person to carefully research information, discuss with a health professional and determine the best dosage for them. Exaserbating the problem is that in North America, brands of Siberian Ginseng (Genseng, ginsing) vary greatly in their potency. There is very little control over how much of the active ingredient in Ginseng actually exists in the capsules. While higher quality products are likely to be at least somewhat more expensive, they are still more reliable and so are recommended. Siberian Gensing has been shown to increase energy, blood flow, mental alertness and has other benefits. It is recommended that aftger a 2-3 month period, a cessation period of 2 weeks be undertaken, and then the original dosages resumed.

Researchers in the Univeristy of Chicago, studied the use of a ginseng extract for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Ginseng tea has been shown to have many beneficial effects on health. Diabetes is a major health problem worldwide. The condition affects about 8% of the U.S. population and 5% of the population in other nations.// The vast majority of people with diabetes more than 70 percent — have type 2 diabetes, which is often accompanied by obesity. Diabetics are at high risk for complications caused primarily by high blood sugar levels, and effective blood sugar control is essential to reducing the risk of these complications. Throughout history, many cultures have used the root of Asian ginseng to treat type 2 diabetes because of its anti-diabetic properties.

Investigators from the University of Chicago extracted the key component in ginseng from the berry of the plant to determine if mice had a positive effect on diabetic symptoms. Mice that were genetically engineered to have type 2 diabetes received injections of the substance daily for 10 days. They were then compared to mice that didn’t receive the injections.

Researchers found the mice that received the injections had significantly improved results on standard tests to measure diabetes severity. These mice also lost a significant amount of weight, mainly due to a reduction in food intake and increase in energy expenditure and body temperature. The extract also significantly lowered cholesterol levels. Investigators believe the anti-diabetic activity of the ginseng extract used in this study may one day have clinical implications for the treatment of humans with diabetes.

The American Journal of Epidemiology have published that gensing the anti-cancer properties that will improve the survival rates of breast cancer among women.

According to foodconsumer.org the study found that those who took ginseng before diagnosis were 30 percent more likely to survive breast cancer. // Those who took ginseng after treatment were more likely to have a more active social life compared with those who did not take any ginseng.

However, the study did not mean to say ginseng is the cause of the better breast cancer survival, but to suggests a possibility. Women who used ginseng may also use some other supplements, which make it hard for scientists to separate the effect of ginseng from that of other supplements.

Previous lab studies have found that some ginseng constituents exhibit anti-cancer properties. Because of this, people tend to believe taking ginseng supplements may help women survive breast cancer.

Ginsengs commonly seen on the market include Panax ginseng also known as Asian ginseng and Panax quinquefoliu, known as american ginseng, mostly from the state of Wisconsin.

Ginseng is often used to enhance the immune system and help relieve fatigue. American ginseng is believed to be mild whereas Red Korean ginseng seems more effective in helping relieve fatigue.

Researchers caution that patients should talk with doctors about use of ginseng supplements because some constituents may potentially react with drugs.

Using a healthy diet to lower the breast cancer is far more important than treatment of breast cancer.
